Embossing and debossing create dimensional design on paper by creating a raised (embossed) or depressed surface (debossed). Both processes use two metal dies – one with a raised surface and the other with a recessed mating surface – to apply heat and pressure to the paper sheet placed between them. Depending on the complexity of the design, dies can range from simple single-level dies to multi-level and hand-tooled sculptured dies.
Either technique can be combined with offset printing and foil stamping; when used alone, it is called blind embossing.
